Organic Food in Panama: Where and how to buy

The consumption of organic food in Panama is on the rise. Consumers are becoming more aware of the advantages of organic products, which contain fewer pesticides and chemicals. Conventional food supply in Panama is strongly affected by pesticide and herbicide use. Many chemicals that are forbidden in food production in the USA or Europe are still being used in Panama. Farmers often do not measure correctly when applying harmful chemicals. Therefore, it’s recommendable to look for healthier options which also strengthens the supply of such product.

Access to organic food is increasing, with multiple resources becoming available. Farmers’ markets, specialized grocery stores, and delivery to your home are the most common ways to receive organic produce in Panama.

Understanding Organic Food

Organic food refers to products cultivated without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This approach focuses on natural processes and materials, promoting soil health and biodiversity.

Opting for organic foods offers health benefits. These products may contain higher nutrient levels and fewer chemical residues. Many individuals choose organic to mitigate the potential risks linked to conventional farming methods.

There are local organic products and a big variety of imported organic products which often sell at a premium to US or European prices due to the import costs. Some raw dry goods of South American origin, like quinoa, can be found significantly cheaper. Depending on where and when you buy the budget for organic food products balances itself out neatly.

Production of Organic Food in Panama

In Panama, several local certifications validate adherence to organic standards. Regulations mandate that producers complete assessments to verify organic practices. The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) started overseeing certification in 2017 at they adhere to international standards set out by the Codex Alimentarius set out by the UN.

In reality, many small farmers do not have the money to complete assessments for certification or pay the annual fees that are linked to it. Many therefore simply advertise that they do not use pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, etc. – they are implicitly organic but not officially as in other countries. In addition to that, overuse of chemicals by commercial farmers can impact small farmers that are trying to produce organically.

In general, farmers in the Darien region are less wealthy and can’t afford use of chemicals in food production. Produce from the East of Panama is therefore generally less affected by pesticides, while in the more established farming areas in the West of the country the use of harmful chemicals is rampant with the highest concentration probably in Cerro Punta. Any produce caught wild or harvested wild will be better than any organic certified standard and aquacultures, due to their setup produce very clean food, too.
