Luxury Travel in Panama: Where to Stay and What to Do

Panama is positioning itself as a significant luxury travel destination, blending culture, breathtaking nature, and contemporary amenities. Its distinct offerings draw travelers in search of unique experiences. Panama is not a mainstream travel destination and this is exactly the appeal for luxury travelers. This article aims to provide insights into luxury travel in Panama, places to stay and inspiration on what to do.

The Appeal of Panama

Panama is emerging as a luxury travel destination thanks to its breathtaking natural beauty and rich culture:

The country features a variety of ecosystems that include rainforests, beaches, and mountain ranges. This diverse environment attracts nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The historical significance of the Panama Canal, along with the distinctive blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences, shapes the local culture, which is reflected in the cuisine, music, and events.

Travelers in pursuit of luxury will discover exclusive experiences, from private yacht charters to gourmet dining adventures. Whether investigating urban attractions or unwinding in tranquil beach resorts, Panama offers a remarkable getaway that merges indulgence with rich experiences.

Luxury Hotels in Panama City

Casco Viejo (Old Town)

1. Hotel La Compañía

Hotel La Compañía, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, is a luxury hotel that opened its doors in April 2022 after extensive renovations located centrally in Casco Viejo. The property features 88 rooms and suites, each reflecting Spanish, French, or American architectural styles, offering guests a unique cultural experience. Amenities include a rooftop pool, fitness center, and multiple dining options that showcase local and international cuisine. The hotel’s design preserves historical elements, such as original stone walls and wooden beams, providing a blend of heritage and modern comfort. The attention to detail in the decoration and quality of service by the staff is outstanding. The variety of restaurants and bars is outstanding. Speaking of: We can’t mention Hotel La Compañía without mentioning two places that probably deserve their own articles: Villa Ana 1928 an off-site well hidden private dining experience and Casanova, their hidden speak-easy with secret location. You need to come and find it yourself.

The man behind the hotel is visionary Chris Lenz, who has been instrumental in the development of the hotel, aiming to position Panama as a luxury tourist destination with more projects under development.

2. Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo

Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo is located in Panama City’s historic district and occupies the former Club Unión building, a social hub established in 1917 that hosted notable figures such as Queen Elizabeth II (1953), Albert Einstein, and Eleanor Roosevelt. After the club’s relocation in 1967 and subsequent years of disrepair, the Accor hospitality group collaborated with Panamanian architect Manuel Choy of Futura Arquitectonica to transform the structure into a luxury hotel. The renovation preserved the building’s original French colonial architecture, seamlessly blending it with modern amenities to create a sophisticated destination that honors its storied past, opened in January 2023.

The hotel features 159 elegant rooms and suites, many with balconies providing ocean views. Guests can enjoy a variety of dining options, including a sophisticated brasserie, rooftop bar and a speak-easy – will you find it? The expansive Pacific-facing pool deck offers a serene setting for relaxation. For wellness enthusiasts, the hotel provides a holistic spa and a fully-equipped gym. Additionally, the opulent ballroom, accommodating up to 200 people, serves as an ideal venue for events and gatherings.

3. American Trade Hotel

The American Trade Hotel pathed the way for Casco Viejo to become a unique and luxurious neighbourhood: Photos on the wall in its central staircase remind of its history when it was illigally occupied by criminal gangs. Today it is a boutique luxury hotel that seamlessly blends old-world elegance with contemporary design. The building, originally constructed in 1917, was designed by architect Leonardo Villanueva Meyer. It initially housed the American Trade Developing Company, featuring a department store on the ground floor and the city’s first modern apartments above. After a period of decline, the structure was restored to its former grandeur and now offers 50 rooms and suites, a jazz club, a café, and a rooftop pool, making it a proud member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The hotel also features the American Trade Hall, an elegant event space ideal for weddings, social gatherings, and corporate events. Its prime location, right at the Plaza Herrera, allows guests to explore Casco Viejo’s vibrant culture, dining, and nightlife, all within walking distance.
