Best Beaches in Panama to Discover

Panama is a true gem for beach lovers, offering unparalleled diversity thanks to its unique geography. Therefore we have compiled the best beaches in Panama for you to discover.

Could it be in any way cooler?

One one side the Caribbean Sea with warm waters and no tide at all, while on the other side of the country you’ll find the Pacific Ocean, with colder waters, changing currents, one of the biggest tidal movements in the world, whale season and some of the best tuna fishing in the world. It’s totally insane.

Two completely different coastlines are not enough. There are a number of island groups that are virtually unknown to seasoned world travellers and even to the locals, because getting there can be hard and costly. The experience of walking a freshly paved beach, being the only set of foot steps on it: There is no price in the world for this.

For example, the Bocas del Toro archipelago, with its laid-back vibe, vibrant coral reefs, and lively surf scene, contrasts beautifully with the remote and untouched elegance of the San Blas Islands, where the indigenous Guna people maintain their traditional way of life. Meanwhile, the Pacific hosts the Pearl Islands archipelago (Islas Perlas), known for their secluded beaches and whale-watching opportunities, as well as the breathtaking Isla Secas and Boca Chica, havens for eco-adventurers and divers.

Whether you’re seeking retreats, water sports, or cultural immersion, Panama’s beaches promise unforgettable experiences, blending the beauty of two oceans with unique island escapes. This guide will take you through the very best Panama has to offer.

1. San Blas Islands

The San Blas Islands are located in the Guna Yala region. There are 365 islands and cays stretching over 226 kilometers (140 miles). People say the beaches are better than the Maldives. Fine white sand and turquoise crystal clear waters with some of the best snorkeling in the world. While the islands are is inhabited by the indigenous Guna people, providing a distinctive cultural experience alongside picturesque views, most of the islands are empty as they have no freshwater supply and life on the islands therefore is actually pretty tough.

The islands boast numerous pristine beaches, perfect for individuals seeking peace and quiet. Activities include lounging on the shore, snorkeling in the clear waters, and engaging with local communities. Visitors enjoy traditional Guna cuisine and their traditional art called “molas”, intricately hand-sewn textiles created using a reverse appliqué technique, where layers of brightly colored fabric are cut and stitched together are recognized world wide.

Getting there is not so easy and staying there comes with a couple challenges. Luckily the street leading to San Blas was done up in early 2024, which allows you to drive in 2.5h from Panama City even with a normal car. We still recommend driving with a 4×4 and move in to manual mode to shift on low gears because the street goes up and down and has many curves, your breaks will be thankful. Alternatively, the Guna can pick up you at your house or accommodation for a day trip or your vacation.

2. Pearl Islands Isla Contadora

It’s impossible to pick a favourite beach in the archipelago of the Pearl Islands. Each island surprises with unique vegetation and different birds or other animals making their home there. We leave it up to you to start discovering this piece of heaven for yourself. Here is just enough information to get you started and excited:

Named for the abundance of pearls once found in their waters, the islands gained fame in 1513 when Vasco Núñez de Balboa explored the archipelago shortly after crossing the Isthmus of Panama. I can’t imagine what they must have been thinking when finding shovel loads of pearls on the beaches. Unfortunately this is no more: The rapid decline of the pearl industry out there in 1940 is attributed to overexploitation and environmental changes with a virus giving the oysters the rest. Well, we can’t change that – we are here for amazing beaches and here are our tips:

Isla Contadora, the “accountant island” (where they counted all the pearls) stands out as the most developed, offering excellent infrastructure, restaurants, hotels, even an air strip and pristine beaches. It is a popular choice for visitors seeking convenience and comfort. For a more remote, at times, nearly private island experience, Sonny Island is a hidden gem, especially during the off-season, when tranquility and seclusion are at their peak. Meanwhile, Isla Pedro González (Pearl Island Resort) and San José Island (Hacienda del Mar) cater to luxury travelers, with high-end resorts that combine exclusivity and natural beauty.

Getting to the Pearl Islands is easy. A speed ferry from Panama City provides a scenic ride, or visitors can fly directly to Contadora from Albrook Airport with Aero Albrook. For a unique experience, day cruises or multi-day charters with local companies allow travelers to explore multiple islands and enjoy the stunning beaches at their leisure.

3. Bocas del Toro

6. Isla Escudo de Veraguas

Isla Escudo de Veraguas, located off Panama’s Caribbean coast, is a well guarded secret. Insanely beautiful videos and photos on social media started increasing the popularity of the Island due to it’s pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It’s hard to reach and apparently was used as a stop over by drug smugglers in the past. It’s also considered the birthplace of the Ngöbe–Buglé people. All reasons for why the beautiful island with it’s heavenly beaches are so untouched. However, there is another reason: Be aware that the island is home to the Central American eyelash pit viper (Bothriechis nigroviridis), a venomous snake species known for its distinctive “eyelash” scales above the eyes.  These vipers inhabit the island’s dense vegetation, so caution is advised when exploring beyond the beaches. Local explorers pointed out that for whatever reason this unique paradise island seems to be the perfect habitat for the vipers. Despite this, Isla Escudo de Veraguas remains a captivating destination for those looking to experience one of Panama’s wildest and untouched natural wonders.

7. Islas Secas

Islas Secas, an exclusive archipelago off Panama’s Pacific coast, comprises 14 islands with untouched beaches and rich marine biodiversity. The main island, Isla Cavada, features secluded beaches with golden sands and clear waters, providing an idyllic setting for relaxation and exploration. Visitors can enjoy private beach picnics, snorkeling, and kayaking in the tranquil bays. The surrounding coral reefs are home to diverse marine life, making the area a prime spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The resort offers luxury accommodations that blend seamlessly with the natural environment, ensuring guests have direct access to the beaches and panoramic ocean views. Islas Secas provides a harmonious blend of luxury and nature, offering an unparalleled beach experience in Panama.

The resort is a secret of the rich and famous in the world: In 2023 Mr. Beast, the world’s biggest and most successful YouTuber spend a weekend on the islands and doesn’t stop raving about the experience (Check out the Video on YouTube). In 2024, the newly-wed Ambani couple, Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, supposedly spend their honeymoon on Islas Secas. So, if someone who spends over $600 million on their wedding goes for their honeymoon there, it must be a pretty decent place, right?

8. Boca Chica

Boca Chica, located in Panama’s Chiriquí province, serves as a gateway to a collection of pristine beaches and islands within the Gulf of Chiriquí National Marine Park. The area is renowned for its tranquil waters, white sandy shores, and lush tropical landscapes. One of the beaches to pick out is Playa Gavilla, situated on Isla Boca Brava. A short 30-minute ferry ride from the Amador Causeway brings visitors to this island, often referred to as the “Island of Flowers” due to its lush vegetation and vibrant flora.

While Taboga Beach may not be the most pristine or expansive in Panama, it provides stunning views of Panama City’s skyline and all the massive ships anchored near the entrance of the Panama Canal. Just the ride on the ferry is already an amazing experience. This proximity to the city makes it an ideal spot for a day trip, allowing visitors to enjoy a beach setting without extensive travel.
